Hypocrisy brought the Mass Hallucination Tour 2026 on April 23, 2026 to Essigfabrik, Köln and we were there for a first hand experience report and snap some photos from the pit.
The performances of Abbath, Vomitory, and Vreid had already pushed the adrenaline in the sold-out Essigfabrik in Cologne to a high-octane level. With around 1,200 attendees packed into the venue, the atmosphere was primed long before the headliner took the stage.
At 9:30 PM, Hypocrisy emerged in a wash of red light and thick fog, immediately setting a dark and ominous tone. The drum kit remained hidden beneath a black veil until the intro music began, when it was dramatically unveiled to reveal an impressively designed setup. The entire stage production—complete with LCD screens and a cohesive visual aesthetic—was ambitious and striking.
Unfortunately, much of this effort was partially lost in the overwhelming amount of stage fog. While the smoke created a fitting atmospheric backdrop for the band’s sound, it also dulled the visual impact of the production. It felt like a trade-off: the ambiance benefited, but the finer visual details were often obscured.
Despite this, the crowd remained fully engaged, showing unwavering support throughout the set. If Abbath had already brought the room to a peak, Hypocrisy took it even further, delivering the final, crushing ride of the night.
The setlist spanned over three decades of material, performed with confidence and a thunderous presence. Opening with a track from their latest album “They Will Arrive,” the band led the audience through a mix of classics and newer tracks, including “Killing Art”, “Inferior Devoties” ,“Fire in the Sky”, “Fractured Millenium”,“Roswell 47”. “Warpath” and “End of Disclosure” alongside material from their latest album, Worship like “Chemical Whore”
Drawing from past interviews, it’s clear the band pays close attention to what fans want—whether through streaming data, feedback, or live reactions. As they’ve put it: “some songs simply have to be played, otherwise beer mugs fly.” After more than three decades, Hypocrisy’s sound remains unmistakable—dark, heavy, yet driven by memorable melodies—continuing to fill venues even without a new studio release since 2021.
All four bands played with real integrity—no begging for applause or interrupting the sets with T-shirt sales pitches. There were no long speeches, just pure music delivered as powerfully as possible. Major respect for that.
