On an overly hot Sunday evening, the Blue Shell offered not only a refreshing air-conditioned room but also refreshing music.
Cologne’s own Bashed Potatoes opened the night with great vocal harmonies and interchanging instrumental solos. Bashed Potatoes is a five-piece progressive bluegrass band based in Cologne, Germany. Formed in 2021, the quintet blends traditional American Southern acoustic roots with influences spanning jazz, rock, classical, and baroque music. The group features skilled multi-instrumentalists from Germany, the USA, and New Zealand.
The musicians first crossed paths in 2015 during a monthly jam session known as the “Cologne Bluegrass Bash” at a local pub called Manni’s Rästorang. They officially united as a touring ensemble a few years later. Known for their tight vocal harmonies and dynamic acoustic solos, their performances typically revolve around a single shared microphone in traditional bluegrass style.
They released their studio album ‘All You Can Eat’ through House Master Records. Their repertoire features a mix of high-energy instrumentals, modern “newgrass” songs, and original compositions.
The transition between the opening act and the headliner happened in an unusual way. The banjo and fiddle players from the headlining band joined Bashed Potatoes for a jam session, making the changeover far more interesting and engaging than a standard stage reset.
