Dick Brave is a fictional Canadian Rockabilly persona adopted by German pop singer Sasha in the early 2000s, known for reinterpreting pop and rock hits with a 1950s rock ‘n’ roll style. Backed by “The Backbeats,” the project became a cult success, yielding a number-one album “Dick This!” (2003) and a 2026 comeback album, Back for Good.
Origins and Career
- Creation: Dick Brave was created as a fun, artistic alter ego for Sasha to step away from pop stardom. The backstory claimed he was a Canadian rockabilly artist, creating a “serious” persona that often left fans guessing.
- According to his fictional biography, Dick Brave was born in 1972 in Vancouver, Canada, as Richard Leoncoer Junior. Backstory Details: The character grew up without a father and got his nickname “Dick Brave” at age 16 after stealing a motorcycle and riding across the frozen Lost Lagoon in Vancouver.
- The Band: Dick Brave & The Backbeats included musicians such as Mike Scott, Matt, and Phil Hanson.
- Success: Their debut album, Dick This!, reached number one in Germany in 2003, featuring rockabilly versions of popular songs.
- Hiatus and Comeback: After a 2004 farewell, the band returned in 2011 with Rock’n’Roll Therapy.
- 2026 Comeback: In 2026, Dick Brave returned with the album Back for Good, featuring covers of songs like “Take Good Care of My Baby” and a 2026 club tour.
Why Dick Brave?
- Artistic Freedom: For Sasha, this role was a form of “therapy” that provided a break from pop music, allowing him to play music he was passionate about.
- Legacy: The character helped Sasha gain credibility and a new audience outside of mainstream pop, bridging the gap between nostalgic rock ‘n’ roll and modern music.
The project is often seen as a tongue-in-cheek homage to classic 1950s rock, with the frontman himself described as a “rock ‘n’ roll legend” by some fans.
The Real Origin
In 2002, Sasha created Dick Brave as a humorous lark for an unofficial Christmas concert for friends. The project, featuring a band called The Backbeats, was meant to be a one-off performance where they played 1950s-style rockabilly covers of modern pop songs. However, the act was so successful that they recorded the album Dick This! (2003), which reached number one on the German charts and went double platinum.
The Fictional Legend
To keep the act alive, a fictional backstory was invented:
The Persona: Dick Brave is supposedly a Canadian rockabilly singer who speaks German with a heavy North American accent.
The “Tragedy”: Following the band’s initial success and a final concert in 2004, the legend claimed Dick Brave had disappeared in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash.
Rockabilly star Dick Brave is back on stage—and the response couldn’t be louder.
Hamburg musician Sasha returned to Cologne for a second sold-out show as his alter ego Dick Brave, following his April 25 performance at the Gloria Theatre. This latest stop, part of his club tour, once again drew an enthusiastic crowd to the Live Music Hall.
Dick Brave first stepped away from the spotlight in 2004, only to return in 2011 before going quiet again. Now, in January 2026, Sasha revived the character with a new double album featuring 20 well-known hits—reimagined in his signature rockabilly style. From “Back for Good” to “The Winner Takes It All,” “Sex Bomb,” “Shake It Off,” and “The A-Team,” the concept remains as appealing today as it was decades ago. Unsurprisingly, all 17 dates on the tour sold out quickly.
Even before the first note, the stage set the tone for the evening: a minimalist design evoking the 1950s, dominated by a giant illuminated “DICK” backdrop. Simple white lights beamed upward from the front edge of the stage, giving the whole setup a retro, almost vintage TV-show aesthetic that perfectly matched the rockabilly vibe.
Right on cue at 8 PM, Dick Brave and his band took the stage, launching into a high-energy rockabilly version of “Back for Good.” The packed venue erupted instantly. With a few Elvis-style moves and playful swagger, Brave addressed the crowd: “Boys and girls, friends and neighbours, are you ready to get this party started?”—before diving straight into “Get the Party Started.”
Between songs, he chatted in a charming German-English mix, maintaining his tongue-in-cheek Canadian persona. Backed by a tight four-piece band, Brave delivered exactly what fans came for: great rock ’n’ roll with a playful twist.
Highlights included upbeat reinterpretations of “Blinding Lights” and “Take On Me,” while “Be the One” gained a driving rhythm with a Latin-tinged finish. “Shake It Off” got a full rock ’n’ roll makeover, heating up the already packed room, while “Beautiful Things” provided a powerful, slower moment. Even “Freedom” brought energy—though dancing proved difficult in the tightly packed crowd.
A run of classic rock ’n’ roll followed, including “La Bamba,” “All Shook Up,” “Teddy Bear,” “Summertime Blues,” “High School Confidential,” and “Buona Sera.”
The set continued with crowd-pleasing versions of “Ordinary World,” “Bad Guy,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” and “The Winner Takes It All.” The audience sang along loudly during “I’m Still Standing,” creating one of the night’s standout moments. Throughout, Brave moved effortlessly across the stage, proving his knack for transforming virtually any song into a convincing rockabilly number.
The first encore featured “Take Good Care of My Baby” and a lively “Black or White.” But the Cologne crowd wasn’t done yet—calling the band back for a second encore. This time, Brave delivered a tender, jazz-infused version of “Enjoy the Silence,” turning the classic into a heartfelt ballad, before closing the night with a high-speed rockabilly blast of “Walk This Way.”
A triumphant return, full of energy, nostalgia, and reinvention—Dick Brave proves that rockabilly never really goes out of style.
The evening got off to a strong start with an acoustic opening set by Dominic Moews, who spent around 40 minutes on stage accompanying himself on guitar. His selection of classics—from Elvis Presley and Creedence Clearwater Revival to John Denver—quickly drew the audience in, sparking relaxed sing-alongs and setting a warm, inviting tone that perfectly prepared the room for the headliner.
