Intervals – In Verses Tour 2026 at Carlswerk Victoria

The evening kicked off with the instrumental progressive metal band Intervals. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, they delivered an impressive set. I had only listened to them briefly before the gig, but by the end, I walked away a fan. The soundscape they created reminded me of the Joe Satriani concerts I’ve attended in Calgary, though their musical style is quite different. Their set flowed seamlessly from upbeat, melodic passages into crushing riffs, keeping my head nodding throughout.

Progressive metal—and the kind of music bands like Intervals create—doesn’t always translate smoothly to a live setting, even if it’s a popular genre on platforms like YouTube. Highly intricate, instrumental pieces can sometimes lose their impact without vocals to anchor the live audience, especially in a 1,200-capacity venue. Even so, Intervals managed to rise above those challenges, delivering a performance that kept the crowd energized and fully engaged from start to finish. The room was filled and stayed packed from the beginning to the end of their set, a clear sign that they had the audience locked in the whole time.

Intervals is a Canadian progressive metal project from Toronto, primarily serving as the creative vehicle for guitarist Aaron Marshall. Originally formed as a full band in 2011, it has evolved into an instrumental solo project known for blending technical djent-style riffs with uplifting, melodic progressive rock.

Live/Studio Members: While Marshall is the sole official member, he frequently collaborates with musicians like Nathan Bulla (drums) and Cameron McLellan (bass) for recordings and tours.

Major Releases:

  • Memory Palace (2024).
