Bywater Call – Broken Souvenirs Tour 2026, defy categorization playing bluesy, soulful, roots rock
Bywater Call is a powerhouse seven-piece Southern soul, roots rock, and blues band from Toronto, Canada. Formed in 2017 by lead vocalist Meghan Parnell and guitarist Dave Barnes, the group has quickly earned a global reputation for their raw, high-energy live performances and eclectic sound, seamlessly blending rock, blues, New Orleans funk, and R&B. The band’s name was inspired by a trip Parnell and Barnes took to the historic Bywater neighbourhood of New Orleans, whose rich musical heritage continues to influence their groove-heavy style. Their music spans the full emotional spectrum of life’s highs and lows, ranging from delicate soul ballads to roaring, arena-sized rock anthems.
Bywater Call made their final German stop of the Broken Souvenirs Tour 2026 at Die Kantine in Cologne. Originally scheduled for the outdoor stage, the concert was moved indoors to the Yard Club due to the unpredictable weather. Taking the stage at 8 PM without an opening act, the seven-piece band had no trouble igniting the audience from the very first song.
By the second number, As If, the jamming was already in full swing, featuring a thrilling exchange of guitar and trumpet solos. This interplay continued throughout the evening with saxophone-versus-guitar duels, trumpet-versus-guitar duels, and moments where all three instruments traded solos. Dave Barnes delivered superb finger-picked slide work on his Gibson Standard Les Paul, weaving it throughout the set.
From the opening song, Josie, it was immediately apparent that Meghan Parnell possesses one of the finest voices in modern blues-rock. Three-minute songs were nowhere to be found; nearly every number stretched far beyond its studio length, allowing ample room for the band’s extensive instrumental explorations.
Is This Thing On slowed the pace and drew the audience into an extended sing-along, built around a memorable “ooo-ooo-ooo” refrain. Sunshine featured a jazzy saxophone solo that further showcased the band’s remarkable genre-bending abilities.
The setlist drew from all three of the band’s studio albums while also offering a preview of material from their upcoming fourth album, expected to be released in July. Crowd favourites Sweet Maria, Ain’t No Friend of Mine, and Everybody Knows wrapped a highly successful evening.
The band will return to Bonn for another concert in January 2027.
