An Intimate Evening with Ian Hooper

Ian Hooper – 2 AM Rockstars Solo Tour at Club Volta, Cologne

Ian Hooper, frontman of the indie-folk trio Mighty Oaks, brought his solo 2 AM Rockstars tour to Club Volta in Cologne, offering fans an intimate and heartfelt night of music.

An American living in Berlin since 2008, Hooper describes himself as a “folk and country artist from the Pacific Northwest.” With over a decade of success alongside Mighty Oaks—including five studio albums and performances at major festivals such as Montreux Jazz Festival, Rock am Ring, and Lollapalooza—Hooper has firmly established himself on the international stage. Now, without stepping away from the band, he’s exploring a fresh path as a solo artist, leaning toward a more upbeat, pop-infused sound.

At Club Volta, Hooper presented songs from his new album 2 AM Rockstars in an intimate setup that erased the barrier between artist and audience—no pit, just shared space and connection. Backed by a talented quartet of young musicians, he crafted a balanced evening that intertwined personal storytelling (the heart of his songwriting) with a mix of mid-tempo and upbeat tracks from the new record, as well as a few unreleased songs.

The roughly 300-strong audience responded enthusiastically throughout the 17-song set, clapping along to “Ill Wait for You” and lighting up especially for the infectious “Happy.” There wasn’t a single song left unrewarded by applause and cheers.

After a brief intermission, Hooper returned for a four-song encore. Seated at the piano, he spoke about his love for country music and his commitment to writing original material rather than performing covers—though he made one touching exception. Bathed in soft white light and surrounded by gentle stage fog, Hooper lead us into the encore with a heartfelt rendition of Tyler Childers’ “Nose on the Grindstone.” It was an intimate, honest moment that encapsulated the spirit of the evening: authentic, soulful, and deeply human.

The ultra intimate setting of the encore

The remaining three songs of the encore were delivered in a truly unique way. The band quietly left the stage and stepped into the middle of the crowd, surrounding themselves with fans for a completely acoustic finale. This spontaneous move transformed the end of the night into an even more intimate experience—just voices, instruments, and heartfelt storytelling. Hooper shared personal, life-inspired songs that resonated deeply, and as the audience gathered close around the band, the sense of connection felt entirely genuine. It was one of those rare live moments where the line between performer and audience simply disappeared.

Ian Hooper is an American country-folk artist living in Germany since 2008.
