Max McNown at E-Werk, Cologne, Germany

June 23, 2026

The evening at the iconic E-Werk Cologne began in front of a packed house, despite the intense heat wave that had settled over the city. One of Cologne’s premier concert venues was filled to capacity as fans eagerly awaited the arrival of rising country-folk star Max McNown.

In the moments before the show, the venue’s sound system played two familiar classics: The Boys of Summer by Don Henley and I Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty. As the latter gradually transitioned into the evening’s opening number, one might have expected a spontaneous crowd singalong to accompany the universally beloved anthem. Surprisingly, the audience remained relatively restrained, saving their energy for what was about to come.

Before singing a single note, McNown made an immediate impression. As he and his band took the stage, he jumped down into the pit, running along the barrier exchanging high-fives with fans along the front row. The gesture set the tone for a performance built on connection and genuine enthusiasm. The night started off with Love Me back, Turned Into Missing You, This Side of Heaven and Stand Still.

The American breakout singer-songwriter from Bend, Oregon, has rapidly built an international following through his blend of modern country, folk, and pop influences. From busking on Southern California beaches to amassing millions of streams online, McNown’s rise has been remarkably swift. For anyone who may have questioned the speed of his ascent, this performance offered a convincing answer about his real talent.

McNown possesses a natural stage presence that is matched by an exceptional live voice. In fact, his vocals come across even more impressively in concert than on his studio recordings. His slightly raspy yet warmly resonant voice filled every corner of the venue, effortlessly hitting the required notes while conveying genuine emotion. Around him, a tight and highly capable band provided precise musical support, allowing the songs to breathe while maintaining a strong sense of momentum throughout the set. Two covers were incorporated in the setlist, Yellow was featured as the ending of Something To Someone triggering a huge cheer. Three Little Birds was blended in to Marley with a massive singalong.

Comparisons to Zach Bryan are inevitable. Both fans and critics have pointed to McNown’s gravelly vocal delivery, heartfelt songwriting, and unpolished authenticity as qualities that place him firmly within the contemporary Americana and indie-folk landscape. Yet while those similarities are easy to hear, McNown demonstrated that he is far more than a follower of current trends. His performance showcased an artist with a distinct voice, growing confidence, and the ability to command a stage with both energy and sincerity.

The setlist featured the well known songs as Done For,

Heart You Didn’t Break, Forever Ain’t Long Enough and of course A Lot More Free, Better Me for You (Brown Eyes).

By the end of the night, it was clear that the enthusiasm surrounding Max McNown is not merely the result of streaming numbers or social media momentum. It is built on strong songs, compelling performances, and a genuine connection with audiences—qualities that were on full display in Cologne.
