Maddox Batson live at Club Volta

William Maddox Batson (born December 13, 2009) is an American country-pop singer, songwriter, and social media sensation who has been dubbed by media outlets like Rolling Stone as country music’s potential answer to Justin Bieber. Born in Nashville, Tennessee and raised partly in Alabama, the 16-year-old artist rapidly transitioned from viral internet fame to a signed Warner Records artist, building a massive fanbase with his blend of pop melodies and modern country vibes.

🎵 Musical Career & Breakthrough
  • Viral Beginnings: Batson first gained widespread attention in 2023 by posting covers of popular tracks from artists like Zach Bryan and the Red Clay Strays on TikTok and Instagram.
  • Debut Success: His early 2024 debut single “Tears in the River” rocketed into the top 20 of Spotify’s US Viral 50 chart, amassing millions of streams within months.
  • Major-Label Debut: Following his explosion in popularity, he signed with Warner Records and released his debut EP, First Dance, in 2025, which was later expanded into a deluxe version titled First Dance (The After Party).

Despite strong promotion efforts — including publishing my Zoom interview with Maddox Batson for CountryMusicNews.de— ticket sales for the show at Club Volta were disappointingly weak. Roughly 100 people attended, mostly teenage girls accompanied by their parents. The small crowd was enthusiastic and loud, but it couldn’t hide the fact that the venue felt largely empty.

And this wasn’t an isolated case. Artists like DUG and Kelsey Waldon faced similarly low or even lower attendance numbers. Whether it was the venue, the weekday scheduling, going for a headlining tour without testing the market as opening act or simply the current state of the genre’s reach in Germany is hard to say. The reality is that not every artist can sell out shows — even in Germany.

During the changeover after the opening act, the venue speakers blasted songs by Taylor Swift while the stage was reset.

Maddox Batson took the stage accompanied by a four-piece band, occasionally playing acoustic guitar himself.

The set opened with Southbound, followed by Truck, God Talking, If I See Her Again, I Don’t Like You Anymore, Somewhere South, and X’s. The performance also featured Tough, a song by Lana Del Rey that was co-written by Maddox.

Look Up received an acoustic interpretation before the show returned to full-band arrangements for fan favourites such as Years in the River, Fallin Easy, and I Wanna Know. The night concluded with crowd favourite GreenDress before wrapping up with No More.

Throughout the concert, Maddox Batson appeared somewhat insecure on stage. Whether that stemmed from his young age, the impressions of a first trip to Europe, the mostly empty venue, or a combination of factors is hard to tell. Still, the small but enthusiastic crowd celebrated the young singer loudly throughout the night.

Vocally, however, the performance was uneven at times, and not every note landed cleanly. Compared to the polished sound of his studio recordings, the absence of noticeable production support and vocal processing on stage became apparent.

Sometimes that is simply part of the journey. Many established stars have spoken about the early days of playing half-empty or even empty clubs before eventually finding their audience. One disappointing turnout does not define an artist’s future, especially for a young performer like Maddox Batson, who is still at the very beginning of his career. Success is rarely guaranteed at every venue or on every tour stop — particularly when building a fanbase in a new market like Germany.

It also once again showed that a massive social media following does not automatically translate into strong ticket sales. Online popularity and real-world concert attendance are often two very different things, especially for emerging artists trying to establish themselves internationally.
