The Manhattan Transfer performed on October 23, 2008 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Alberta, as part of their 35th Anniversary tour. Despite their reputation as a 10-time Grammy Award-winning vocal jazz group, the evening fell short of expectations.
The show opened with Karla Anderson, who delivered a solo acoustic folk set that provided a warm and intimate start to the night.
However, when The Manhattan Transfer took the stage, the energy noticeably shifted. Their set lasted exactly 60 minutes but felt rushed and lacked the engagement one would expect from a group of their stature. The performance came across as uninspired, with an overall sense of indifference from the group.
Technical aspects of the show further detracted from the experience. The sound was weak and unbalanced, raising doubts about whether the front PA system was fully in use or if the audio relied primarily on stage amplification. Additionally, the stage lighting was minimal and did little to enhance the atmosphere.
Overall, the concert felt more like a rehearsal than a polished live performance, making for a disappointing evening given the band’s celebrated legacy.
