16 HORSEPOWER

16 Horsepower (also known as Sixteen Horsepower) is a pioneer of the gothic country genre, originating from Denver, Colorado. After a 20-year hiatus following their 2005 breakup, the band’s original core members have officially reunited for a 2026 tour. The reunion features the original trio—David Eugene Edwards, Jean-Yves Tola, and Pascal Humbert—joined by guitarist Chuck French.

Musical Style and Legacy
Formed in 1992, the band is famous for “The Denver Sound,” a haunting mix of alternative country, bluegrass, and rock.
  • Sound: Their music is defined by David Eugene Edwards’ intense, “preacher-like” vocals and the use of traditional instruments like the banjo, bandoneon, and Chemnitzer concertina.
  • Themes: Lyrics often focus on heavy religious themes such as sin, redemption, and fire-and-brimstone spirituality.
  • Key Albums: Their major studio works include Sackcloth ‘n’ Ashes (1996), Low Estate(1997), Secret South (2000), and Folklore (2002).
