With her inimitable voice, which the New York Times describes as “a soft, dark alto voice with qualities that could be associated with bourbon or buttery soft leather matured in barrels,” Wright sings with a sublime reflection of the cultural structure of America. She overcomes social divisions with an offer of love and a deep sense of humanity. Her music accepts the beauty of reality and a collective experience of belonging. For the listeners, Wright’s songs embody a tradition that allows us to always feel at home.
Wright is inspired by her young years in the southern states, namely Georgia, where she is the musical director of a small church where her father is also a pastor. The gospel music and the joint singing with the church community characterize her first touches with the music, while she soon crosses the Great American Songbook on her way to a brilliant singing career.
With a concert tour in honor of Billie Holiday, Wright made a name for herself nationwide – at the age of only 22 – as a singer whose confident performance steals the show. At the age of 23, she signed a contract with Verve Records and released the album “Salt”, which topped the Billboard charts for contemporary jazz. Her subsequent albums (“Dreaming Wide Awake”, “The Orchard”, “Fellowship”, “Freedom & Surrender”, “Grace”) continue to reach top positions in the charts and her single “Lean In” (from “Freedom & Surrender”) even lands on President Obama’s summer playlist 2016.
In June 2022, Lizz Wright will release a brilliant live album (including short film) with “Holding Space”, which she records as part of her Berlin concert 2018. It will be the first release of her own independent label “Blues & Greens Records”, on which the singer wants to promote numerous talents and newcomers who will benefit from her many years of experience in the music industry.
Her work “Shadow”, published in 2024, and the accompanying tour bring her overwhelming, positive reviews in this country and testify to her skills as an artist, who continuously evolves and conveys a very special energy live. On her tour 2026 she will prove this once again.
