Foy Vance – The Wake World Tour
Foy Vance’s seventh album, *The Wake*, marks the culmination of a decades-long journey characterized by tireless self-discovery and life-altering revelations. During a performance on the Spanish island of Lanzarote in January 1999, the Northern Ireland-born singer-songwriter experienced a moment of unprecedented transcendence while on stage; the very next morning, he learned that his father had suffered a fatal heart attack that exact same night. Overwhelmed by grief yet simultaneously driven by a newfound clarity, Vance immediately resolved to create seven albums inspired by the loss of his father—a traveling preacher who had relocated the family to the American South when Vance was still an infant, and who, early in his childhood, had set him on his life’s path by teaching him to play the guitar. At turns harrowing, ecstatic, and profoundly illuminating, *The Wake* reveals an artist intensely dedicated to the task of preserving the human spirit in an often unforgiving world.
Produced by Ethan Johns (the BRIT Award-winning producer known for his work with Paul McCartney, Ray LaMontagne, and others), *The Wake* showcases Vance’s rugged vocals in a powerful fusion of folk, soul, and Southern blues, infusing every moment with an unbridled vitality. In his intimate exploration of human existence, the Scotland-based artist reflects on deeply personal themes—such as fatherhood and heartbreak—as well as on existential questions, including the fleeting nature of time and the looming crisis of the unchecked rise of AI. As the final installment in an album series that began with his 2007 debut, *Hope*—and which also includes outstanding works such as *The Wild Swan* (2016, executive produced by Elton John), *From Muscle Shoals and To Memphis* (2019, recorded at the historic FAME Studios and Sam Phillips Recording Studios, respectively), and *Signs of Life* (2021, partially created at Vance’s home in the Scottish Highlands)—the result stands as the purest distillation to date of his truly unique artistry, infusing songs of longing, loss, and hard-won acceptance with a defiant joy.
