Foy Vance’s seventh album, *The Wake*, marks the culmination of a decades-long journey characterized by tireless self-discovery and life-altering revelations. During a performance on the Spanish island of Lanzarote in January 1999, the Northern Ireland-born singer-songwriter experienced a moment of unprecedented transcendence while on stage; the very next morning, he learned that his father had suffered a fatal heart attack that exact same night. Overwhelmed by grief yet simultaneously driven by a newfound clarity, Vance immediately resolved to create seven albums inspired by the loss of his father—a traveling preacher who had relocated the family to the American South when Vance was still an infant, and who, early in his childhood, had set him on his life’s path by teaching him to play the guitar.
