Father John Misty is one of the most gifted storytellers of our time, and on his latest album, he once again masterfully weaves the chronicles of life. Josh Tillman, the mastermind behind Father John Misty, remains the astute lyricist his fans love him for on his sixth album, “Mahashmashana.” Reflecting the transience of life, the title symbolically alludes to the final stage of existence: Mahāśmaśāna (महामशामन), borrowed from Hinduism, means something like the cremation ground to which all things are taken for final destruction. The album comprises eight tracks with a total running time of 50 minutes and includes the singles “I Guess Time Makes Fools of Us All,” “She Cleans Up,” and “Screamland.” The latter is a seven-minute epic featuring Alan Sparhawk of Low on guitar and distinguished by an impressive string arrangement by Drew Erickson. Extensive arrangements are a hallmark of Father John Misty’s oeuvre, even though the melancholic lyrics always take center stage. As a reader of Knausgård, he enjoys blending literature with his music, as he demonstrated with quotations from the novel “The Morning Star.”

Tillmann grew up in an evangelical household, so he was all too familiar with stories of heaven and hell. Seeking to escape the confines of his upbringing, he persuaded his parents to let him listen to music outside the Christian sphere, choosing Bob Dylan as his subject. His creative streak, which he discovered at the age of twelve, initially led him to numerous bands before he became the drummer for the Fleet Foxes and finally embarked on a solo career. Father John Misty was born, and with him, an artistic persona who views the world with both cynicism and sensitivity. In 2019, the singer-songwriter initially suspended all social media activity. In 2020, he released the live album “Off-Key in Hamburg,” recorded at the Elbphilharmonie. In the summer of 2023, Father John Misty performed in London as a special guest of Lana Del Rey. His performances in Germany are extremely rare and he is known for his powerful stage presence. The character of his concerts reflects his persona: profoundly musical. For an exclusive concert, Father John Misty finally returns to Germany in June, playing a special show in Cologne—an extraordinary musical experience in the cathedral city.
