Otavalo was pretty much Gringovalo on Saturday, I never seen this many tourists, maybe at Chichicastenango in Guatemala, at an artisan market. The market is loaded with tons of ‘indigenous’ crafts, pretty much sure that 80% of it is made in Asia. But if you comb through the stuff you’ll find some local products as well and some well made ones too, these are not on the cheap side. A 2×4′ handwoven carpet is about $55 USD. Luckily there’s not much room in the van to carry around stuff so purchasing things makes no sense for us. My favourite part is the food anyways, sitting in with the locals for an almuerzo and picking up some eggs, veggies and fruits from the indigenous small producers who basically bring down to the market whatever grows in their garden. Also there is always some good bagel or buns to buy in this market too. The Otavalo market was not necessary a must see again thing, rather a ‘might as well stop by’ with our visiting daughter.
