Not much of a budget statistics guy as sometimes makes no sense, but this time I drew up a list on Colombian prices. It’s far from complete but it gives a basic idea of what to expect, mainly food, gas and camping as we don’t spend on much more than that. Prices are per kg unless specified. These are pretty rock bottom prices from D1, veggie market and Makro. Exito and Jumbo are having higher prices and we save a penny here and there if possible. Small ‘hole in the wall’ stores seems to be charging all over the place, same store charged three different prices for the same thing three different days, I guess depending on is it rainy or sunny today, or what they smoked. If it’s possible we go to D1 as prices are clearly set, quality is good and all items are scanned at the cashier. The biggest disappointment is the lack of natural yogourt in this country. The only place we found organic natural yogourt without sugar added is Jumbo at a fairly high price. Funny as it might sound many times when we ask if a food item contains sugar the answer is no, it has only ‘panela’ or ‘con dolce’. The panela is unrefined cane sugar, and is added basically to everything edible. Colombia is a main producer of panela and has the highest consumption in the world 34.2 kg per capita. With all that seems that the Colombians are generally not overweight. Panela is not GMO but is heavily sprayed with pesticides. But another time about that. I might come back and edit the list later. I find the prices low for those visiting from developed countries and high for the locals. The average Colombian earns $500 a month or less. If you make $2,000 in Canada and pay $17.00 for a kg of chicken breast you are paying the same price asa Colombian pays for it. The prices are converted to CAD (Canadian Dollars).
